Change Your Story

If you want to change your life, all you have to do is change your story

If you want to change your life, change your story.

I mean the story that you constantly tell, both to yourself and to everyone else. You probably tell it without much thought in what you say.

We are always busy telling our story. We share it with just about everyone we meet. The problem is that it’s usually negative. We share our complaints, our hardships, and our worries about tomorrow.

We spend a lot of time building that story in our heads so that we have it down pat for the next opportunity to share it.

The problem is, what we think about most is what we attract into our lives. Do you really want to attract all that stuff that you worry about all the time?

What if all you had to do to change our experience of life was to change your story?

Our Programming

We’ve been programmed from birth to focus on the negative things. We’re conditioned to worry about everything. We have bills to pay, health issues, not enough money for this, no time for that. We are taught to turn life into a prison. And a self-made prison at that.

That negativity is reinforced when you watch or read the news or settle in for a TV show or movie.

That negativity is programmed and reprogrammed into us every single day.

And if you have kids, they’re learning to think the same way because they are always listening and modeling what you do.

Your Current Story

I just finished reading The One Command by Asara Lovejoy. I’ve wanted to read it for a few years and I finally got around to it. I’ll write more about the book next time, but she says one thing in it that is relevant to this idea of changing your story.

She points out that we spend a LOT of time and energy on our story. We worry about all of the things that could go wrong. Most of us have this self-talk track that continuously runs through our heads pointing out all of the bad things that are happening right now and will happen in the future.

Then when we run into a friend we share those same negative thoughts with them. I remember going to Walmart not too long ago. There were two elderly men talking outside the store comparing their lists of health complaints.

We spend most of our waking hours focused on the negativity. Even when we shut down our minds and watch a movie, we’re still getting the same programming. Modern special effects are really cool, but most of that technology is used to display extreme violence and suffering. The same negative programming, just a lot more realistic.

You Can Change Your Story

Obviously it doesn’t serve us to think negatively, bemoan the past, or comfort ourselves by wallowing in sad memories.

Mike Dooley – Leveraging the Universe

Like Asara Lovejoy says in the book, imagine what it could be like if we took all of that energy that we put into creating our negative story and instead put it into creating and telling a positive story.

The Law of Attraction says that what you focus on is what you attract. If you are honest with yourself it isn’t all that hard to see why you experience what you do.

The important thing to realize is that everyone has the power to change their story. And you can do it right now. You don’t have to wait until the time is right or you have a free moment. It doesn’t cost you anything.

All you have to do is put in a little effort, be aware of your talk-track, and be willing to give up your negative story.

What Story Do You Want to Live?

You can live any story that you want. You just have to decide what it is and start telling it. Start by telling your new story to yourself. Take all of that time and energy that you put into your old story and channel it into your new one.

At first it may feel like you are lying to yourself. That’s ok. Just get over it. How does your new story feel compared to your old story? What will it be like when your new story becomes the truth? If it feels good then keep going with it. What you focus on is what your create. So create something that feels good.

Get Help

Sometimes you need help to fully change your story. Things like visualization techniques and vision boards can help. Anything that helps you let go of your old story and get into your new one.

Take a look at Asara Lovejoy’s book, The One Command. The technique she describes in the book goes beyond simple visualization and gives you a tool to help let go of your old story and more fully embrace your new one.

Her process is simple and only takes a few minutes.

I haven’t done the process long enough to share any amazing success stories yet, but I can say that it feels good and positive. Even if nothing else comes from it, being in a space of feeling good and positive has its own benefits.
