Do you want to know how to be free and happy?
In order to live free and happily you must sacrifice boredom. It is not always an easy sacrifice.
– Richard Bach
Who is Richard Bach
Richard Bach is an American author most famous for the book, Jonathan Livingston Seagull. I have also read Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah.
I’ve heard rumors that Richard Bach is the real person behind another of my favorite authors, Jed McKenna, who may or may not be a real person. He’s denied it and an author that my wife knows claims to have actually met Jed McKenna. So I’ll let Richard be Richard and Jed be Jed.
Anyway, Jonathan Livingston Seagull is why I chose the seagull for the image above.
What is Boredom
Boredom is lack of ambition.
Kids especially complain about being bored. “Dad, I have nothing to do.”
Of course that isn’t true. They really mean they have nothing that they want to do. They could put their things away, wash the dishes, vacuum the floor, read a book, write a book, do some sit-ups.
There’s always something they can do, especially something that could benefit themselves in some way.
The only thing holding them back is that lack of ambition.
The same thing goes for adults.
How to Be Free and Happy
To be free and happy takes work.
Constant work.
You don’t have time to be bored.
First, you have to make a choice. How free and happy do you want to be?
Happiness is easy. It’s a choice. You can sit on the couch with your eyes closed and be happy.
But you feel a more fulfilled happy when you accomplish something.
You also feel more free when you accomplish something.
How Free Do You Want to Be?
I choose to be as free as I know how to be. That means that I’m in complete control of my day. I don’t give any of that power away to another person or thing, like an alarm clock or a boss.
How to be free and happy for me means working for myself.
I work at home where I build my business online. That allows me to spend my time with my kids, so I get to be with them all day. I decide when I work and when I play.
If I ever feel bored I just take another look at my to-do list. There’s enough on it to keep me busy well into old age.
That gives me the freedom that I want and the accomplishment gives me something to feel very fulfilled and happy about.
It’s your choice. How free do you want to be? Just know that it’s going to take work. When you start to feel bored, stop and think for a moment. “What can I do right now that will take me just one step closer to my freedom and happiness?”
