Wayne Dyer (affiliate link) was a motivational speaker and self-help author. According to Wikipedia, his first book (Erroneous Zones) is one of the best-selling books of all time. He passed away only a couple years ago, in 2015.
How to Stay Motivated
A lot of people say they have trouble getting motivated. The problem is that they look for motivation in things they don’t really want.
“If I get all my work done today I will reward myself with a bowl of ice cream.”
Obviously the work doesn’t motivate you, so you seek motivation from the ice cream. The problem is, you don’t really want the ice cream either. You’ve read to many articles about how too much dairy is bad for you. Or you know you’ll have the ice cream regardless of whether you get your work done or not.
The key word in Wayne Dyer’s quote is “really.”
You can have anything you really want. You have to want it bad enough to really go after it. If you do, then you will. The goal has the motivation built in.
There is One Thing Missing
In order to really go after something, you have to believe that you can have it or attain it.
“I really want a million dollars, so I’m going to work really hard.”
That’s a great goal, but if you don’t believe that you can ever have a million dollars it won’t keep you motivated long enough to attain it.
How to Stay Motivated
Find something that you really want, that you believe you can have, then really go after it. That’s how you stay motivated.
When things come up you feel less motivated about on the way to your goal, the goal itself keeps you going.
